Course Name: Curriculum and Instruction

Course Description

This is a professional course which exposes teacher-trainees to the theory and practices of teaching. It is divided into three (3) major areas: Part I which acquaints them with the knowledge of designing, developing, implementing as well as making further innovations in curriculum for the betterment and transformation of the education system as a whole. Part II introduces them to the range of alternative teaching and learning materials to enable them adopt and adapt to the various classroom situations as well as acquainting the student teacher with an understanding of the theory underlying these materials and subjecting them to the challenge of integrating the theory of instructional technology into the real practice of teaching and learning. Part III which introduces them to the wide range of alternative methods meant to enable them adopt and adapt to the various classroom situations as well as skills and techniques for effective teaching

Course Description

This course consists of two sections; section A (philosophy of education) and section B (sociology of education).

The first section of the course focuses on the concept of philosophy and philosophy of education including its branches. Major education theories and their practical implications are analyzed as well as teachers’ professional ethics.

The second section covers the concept of sociology and sociology of education. Various sociological concepts and their relationship to education are considered. Sociological factors influencing education such as culture, home and school environments are also examined. Contemporary issues and problems are examined from a sociological perspective.

Course Name: Research Methods in Education         

Course Description

This course guides the student in preparation for the research process right from identifying a topic; analyzing the variables in the study; conducting a literature review; designing the study; construction of instruments and ensuring their reliability and validity; techniques of analyzing and interpreting data; culminating in writing a research proposal. Aspects of report writing are also covered.

Course Description

This course exposes teachers to the philosophy, purpose, principles and practices of teaching the various subjects offered in schools. It lays the foundation for the teacher on; what to teach, planning what to be taught, how to teach, challenges to teaching, utilization of teaching aids, evaluation of teaching, and the special added responsibilities of the teacher besides teaching. It also focuses on the various aspects of education with reference to specific subjects. These aspects include: the role of stakeholders in particular subjects; curricula of these subjects; contemporary issues; current research and trends; problem areas; evaluation; career issues.

Course Description

This is a practical course constituting all aspects of a good lesson

  • Students will be required to demonstrate these skills through peer teaching.
  • It is assumed that students have prior theoretical knowledge underlying these pedagogical skills which they are now to put to application

The course is divided into two major Sections: Micro-Teaching, and Production of Instructional Materials. It gives the teacher an opportunity of practicing: Lesson Planning, teaching methods, and of developing and using low cost instructional materials.
